We are excited to announce that direct carrier billing with Fortumo is now available in India. In total, Fortumo is helping developers collect payments from 75 countries and payments are available to over 4 billion people.
Fortumo has connected with Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and Tata Docomo through direct carrier billing. We have the biggest coverage of mobile payment providers in India with 530 million phone users now connected to our mobile payments. In addition, our direct carrier billing solution enables users to make frictionless payments without sending text messages, which leads to a faster payment flow and increased conversion.
Looking at the Indian gaming market, mobile gaming is showing the biggest potential due to low-end smartphones being more accessible than more expensive PC-s and consoles. The research company Gyan estimates that revenues from mobile gaming in India will reach 574 million USD by 2016. Mobile internet usage already surpassed desktop internet usage in 2012.
India is also interesting due to the huge market share which feature phones still have in the country. In the first half of 2012, 80% of phones in use in India were feature phones and out of the 221 million handsets shipped that year, just 15 million were smartphones. For this reason, we have created a feature-phone friendly payment flow for our cross-platform mobile payments .
Despite the continued use of feature phones, smartphones are seeing increased adoption in India. The number of smartphones sold during Q1 of 2013 grew by 74% with several local device manufacturers grabbing a large portion of the market. With 90% of smartphones running Android, Google is dominating the OS market share in the country.
