Today the mobile technology company Fortumo and the global music streaming service Deezer announce the launch of a new direct carrier billing partnership. Music fans can easily listen to over 53 million tracks from around the world, including Deezer’s signature feature Flow, a personal soundtrack that uses smart data to play all the songs you want to hear with a new hassle free payment method. Deezer users with a Premium account or Family plan can have the plan charged to their mobile bill. This new payment option is now available to Deezer users in Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.
Given that less than 20% of people own a credit card in Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia, while smartphone ownership is above 60%, a large majority of the population has access to digital content but is unable to pay for premium services. Fortumo resolves this issue by allowing any mobile phone owner to make online payments and charge the purchase either to their monthly phone bill or deduct it from their prepaid SIM card.
“The digital population of the Asia Pacific region is growing faster than any other region in the world. For digital merchants this means new opportunities, users and revenue. Carrier billing is tailored for acquiring and converting users on mobile devices and we are excited to partner up with Deezer to increase their presence in the Asia Pacific,” added Andrea Boetti, VP of Global Business Development at Fortumo.
Fortumo’s carrier billing is through Unified SDK. The key features of Unified SDK include:
- Direct integration with telcos, giving merchants access to the latest features of carrier billing, such as dynamic pricing and automated refunds
- Scalability, as only one integration with Fortumo is required to launch multiple telcos, compared to merchants integrating each telco one by one
- The payment flows are managed by Fortumo, which means merchants do not need to deal with localization or compliance issues
- Carrier billing with new telcos and in additional countries can be added without any additional development required by merchants
Due to its bigger reach, security and simplicity for consumers, carrier billing has grown to be one of the leading payment methods for digital content in the Asia Pacific. According to SuperData Research, carrier billing accounts for 17.6% of all digital gaming transactions in the region (behind eWallets at 33.4% and bank cards at 23.4%).
Additional information on the digital ecosystem of South-East Asia can be found from Fortumo’s recent market report.
Fortumo’s direct carrier billing platform is also used by Google Play, Spotify, iflix, Sony, Schibsted, HOOQ, Gaana, EA Mobile, Gameloft, Kinguin, EasyPark and thousands of other merchants. One integration with the platform enables merchants to collect payments from subscribers of more than 350 mobile operators.
