The mobile payments company Fortumo is today launching mobile operator billing in Indonesia, the fourth largest country in the world by population. 205 million phone owners using Telkomsel, XL Axiata, Indosat and Axis networks can now charge purchases for digital content to their mobile operator bill.

As Fortumo is working with hundreds of top app developers and platform owners such as Rovio (Angry Birds), Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Barnes & Noble, Gameloft, Box TV, launching in Indonesia means that over 200 million additional mobile users will now be able to purchase content from many top app and online developers through mobile operator billing.

Indonesia has three times more mobile phone owners than credit card owners and mobile operator billing is already more popular than credit card billing for online payments. The Indonesian digital goods market is estimated to reach 244 million USD in 2013 while less than 10% of payments are made with credit cards. Indonesia has an estimated 57 million smartphone owners, a number which has doubled since last year.

In the recent months, Fortumo has made similar announcements regarding launching mobile operator billing in China (world’s largest country by population) and India (world’s second largest country by population). These countries together with Indonesia are significant not only because of their huge population but also because they have a large share of unbanked consumers who don’t have access to traditional means of payments.

South-East Asian countries as a whole have some of the highest spending on mobile entertainment. According to Fortumo in-app payments data, the monthly average revenue per paying user (ARPPU) is 19.6 USD in Taiwan, 14.5 USD in Thailand and 13.2 USD in Malaysia. In contrast, ARPPU in Western markets is significantly lower – 6.9 USD in the United States, 11.2 USD for the United Kingdom and 10.6 USD for Germany.

In the entire Asia Pacific region, Fortumo is now available for 2.3 billion phone owners in 10 countries – Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand & Vietnam. Globally, Fortumo provides payments in 80 countries through more than 300 mobile operators.

Fortumo is the only mobile payment provider with a self-service setup and no monthly fees or minimum volume commitments – any developer, regardless of size and location can sign up for an account and get started with mobile payments at
