The mobile software developer and publisher Shoal Games and the mobile technology company Fortumo are today launching a direct carrier billing partnership. Users in 100+ countries can now make payments inside Rooplay and Rooplay Originals games by conveniently charging purchases to their mobile phone bill.
“Emerging markets are driving the growth of the mobile ecosystem and require a localized approach to user acquisition, monetization and retention. Carrier billing solves the monetization challenge as it gives all consumers with a mobile device access to online payments in a seamless manner by enabling access through payments and consumption on the same device without any external solutions required. Shoal Games is a leading company in the edtech segment and we look forward to helping them increase their revenue,” said Andrea Boetti, VP of Global Business Development at Fortumo.
Shoal Games will be using Fortumo’s Android SDK to increase its payment coverage using carrier billing. The Android SDK gives Shoal Games the capability to reach subscribers of more than 350 mobile operators in 100 countries through one integration.
“Rooplay, our subscription system of learning games, is growing quickly and new customers and markets are opening up to us through this partnership with Fortumo,” said Jason Williams, CEO of Shoal Games. “Families looking for early learning games systems like Rooplay often prefer to pay using carrier billing and Fortumo offers a flexible and global network of carrier systems for us to publish Rooplay.”
Compared to other payment methods, carrier billing has better coverage as any mobile user (both prepaid and postpaid) has access to payment solutions. This has given carrier billing a global market share of 14.5% for digital gaming payments (3rd place after bank cards and digital wallets) in digital gaming, according to Superdata Research.
Fortumo provides carrier billing to app stores including Google Play, digital media providers including Spotify, iflix, Sony, HOOQ, Gaana and gaming companies like EA Mobile, Gameloft and Kinguin, offers local market insights and facilitates relationships with mobile operators. To achieve this, the company has partnered with more than 350 mobile operators in 100+ countries across the world.
